A two-year-old girl was taken to hospital after a smash on the M1 motorway.

Two cars collided on the north bound carriageway between junction 42 at Lofthouse and junction 43 at Belle Isle just after 2pm today.

Firefighters had to free another person from the one of the vehicles and they also were taken to hospital.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “The two-year-old girl was taken to hospital as a precaution, she is not believed to be seriously injured.”

The northbound carriageway was closed but has since re-opened.

Police have warned of severe delays and stationary traffic between junction 24 at Lofthouse and junction 44 at Rothwell.

Congestion is also affecting traffic as far back as junction 40 at Flushdyke.
