Committed Castleford Tigers volunteer Elsie Jarvis was recognised for her tireless work at a Super League awards ceremony.

The grandmother-of-one was among four finalists who were highly commended by judges at the Foxy Bingo Ladies of the League awards.

The national campaign, now in its second year, identifies the unsung heroes of the sport and recognises women that go the extra mile for their community.

Lizzie Jones, wife to the late Danny Jones of Keighley Cougars, was crowned the winner of the community programme.

Mrs Jarvis first started volunteering at Wheldon Road 22 years ago.

And after being taken on as part-time staff at the club, Tigers’ captain Michael Shenton nominated Mrs Jarvis, 70, for the award.

After receiving her award, Mrs Jones said: “I have no doubt that rugby league would not function as well without the women.”

Mrs Jones received £1,000 holiday vouchers, £1,000 donation from Foxy Bingo to put towards a community project of her choice.

The competition received more than 300 entries and more than 6,000 votes were cast.
