A virus outbreak has struck down a third of pupils at a Pontefract primary school.

Around 60 students at The Rookeries on Carleton Road are thought to be ill with the norovirus.

Health chiefs are warning parents to keep their children off school if they suspect they are ill.

Dr Graham Sutton, consultant in communicable disease control for Public Health England, said: “We suspect this is norovirus. The best thing that parents and staff can do to help is to follow our infection control advice.

“Children should not come to school if they are ill, and stay at home until they are symptom free for 48 hours.”

Dr Sutton said further cases could arise in the next few days but reassured the school and parents the outbreak will come to “a natural end.”
