A NURSING home is appealing for volunteers to help its elderly residents enjoy more outings and activities.

Priory Gardens Nursing Home in Pontefract runs daily activities for its residents – who range in age from 65 to 104 – but needs more volunteers to help.

Rebecca Thomas, activities co-ordinator, said: “We have residents going swimming, going to the library every week, there’s more for them to do because there’s more people to help them. It encourages activities and social stimulation. The difference it makes to residents at the home is amazing.”

Among recent events at the Ladybalk Lane home, which have been organised by volunteers, was a diamond jubilee indoor street party, while another volunteer is organising harvest festival, with residents making salt dough decorations.

Rebecca added: “There are so many things going on, we do reminiscence boxes, in association with Age UK on Mondays, which are brilliant, they contain objects from the 30s and 40s, and it helps us get to know the residents better.

“We have a salon day on Fridays, with aromatherapy massages, nails and hair, reflexology. These are all things volunteers can help with.”

Anyone interested in volunteering or finding out more, can contact Rebecca on 01977 602111.
