A website set up to help attract visitors and businesses to Pontefract has been hailed a success.

Pontefract Town Centre Partnership (PTCP) launched the website – www.pontefractyorkshire.co.uk – to promote the town in April.

It features an events page along with details of shops, businesses and places to visit in the town centre.

Steven Swift, website project manager, said: “We don’t know exactly how many people have come to the town since the website was launched but businesses have told us they’ve seen more customers.”

The website also features a town centre treasure hunt for tourists.

Mr Swift said: “The treasure hunt was something else we did to bring more people into the town and the response we’ve had has been great. One family came all the way from Aldershot to take part.

“Businesses are saying they’re getting more and more customers and that’s what it’s all about.”

Sir Bill O’Brien, secretary of PTCP, said: “The website has been a real benefit to raising the awareness of the town to a wider audience.

“This website gives the town an online presence.”

The PTCP meets once a month at Pontefract Library.

The group, chaired by Jack Kershaw, is made up of businesses, residents and councillors and aims to promote Pontefract.
