SNOW fell on crowds of revellers as Pontefract and Castleford lit up with festive cheer this week.
A snow machine, entertainment and fun for all were present at the towns' exciting Christmas light switch-on events, which brought many families and residents out to   celebrate.

Pontefract's lights were turned on with the help of two local soldiers, Sgt Mark Skelton of 5th Battalion The Rifles and Rifleman Robert Blades, of 3rd Battalion The Rifles.

The town's district councillors and school children also pushed the plunger together at 6.30pm on Monday.

Pontefract South councillor Philip Booth said: "The switch on went well and there was a great atmosphere.

"We thought it would be fitting for serving soldiers to turn on the lights this year as the army is in the thoughts of us all.

"It certainly was well received by the large crowd."

Fairground rides and Featherstone Rovers' stars and mascots also turned out in Pontefract.

Castleford's lights brightened up the town on Tuesday evening and the festivities started with members of the Castleford Maypole and Dance Troupe parading with lanterns in fancy dress from the Lock Lane community centre and across the town's River Aire footbridge.

They then performed on the town centre stage while choirs, pantomine characters, Castleford Tigers' players and the club's Paws and Claws cheerleading team also worked the crowds.

Youngsters turned on the lights with Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's deputy leader.

Featherstone's Christmas lights fun was due to take place last night.
