SILENT tributes honoured the war dead as hundreds of residents attended Remembrance services across the Five Towns.
Poignant ceremonies to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice were held in Pontefract, Castleford, Featherstone and Knottingley, as well as many villages, at 11am on Sunday and yesterday Wednesday November 11, Armistice Day.

In Castleford the families of fallen heroes Rifleman James Backhouse, 18, and 24-year-old Bombardier Craig Hopson laid wreaths with Royal British Legion veterans, as crowds gathered at the town's war memorial on Powell Street.

James' mum Sharon Backhouse, said: "It was a very emotional day for all of us.
"It was lovely to see the representation from the 2nd Rifles and I would like to thank them for coming to lay a wreath as it meant a lot to us.
"It was also nice to see so many people come and pay their respects to our soldiers.
"I think now more than ever we have to give all the support we can to our troops.
"Castleford has been hit hard, but the amount of people that came to the service shows how much everyone cares.
"For us it won't be this one day a year though – we remember him every minute, and there is Christmas to get through, and the future holds many hard days.
"But the service on Sunday was lovely and Jimmy and Craig deserved the respect they were given, as did all the ones before them.
"I would also like to say a big thank you to the Royal British Legion."

In Pontefract legion members led a parade with cadets and a brass band from the town hall to the war memorial on Sunday.
Wreaths were laid and Abide With Me was played before the procession continued to St Giles' Church.
Col Gerald Delaney, vice-president of the Ackworth and Pontefract Royal British Legion, said: "It went exceptionally well. There were more people there than ever before. There was hardly standing room around the memorial."

Services were also held in Featherstone, Knottingley, Ferrybridge, Ackworth, Streethouse, Allerton Bywater, Kippax, Fryston and Methley on both days.
