BOOZING on the streets of Pontefract could be banned from next month in a bid to slash levels of drunken anti-social behaviour in the town.
Wakefield Council's cabinet will next month approve or reject plans to set up an alcohol exclusion zone – which restricts drinking outside premises without special licences.
Police will also have the power to order intoxicated yobs to stop drinking in public places, confiscate alcohol and arrest or fine those who flout the rules.

Pontefract South councillors Philip Booth and Geoff Walsh said the blanket ban was desperately needed.
Coun Booth said: "I do hope that it's going to make a difference to the problems in town, paticularly on market days when there a lot of shoppers and people drinking outside places.
"There's a lot of intimidation goes on in Pontefract and it can only be a good thing to get that curbed – I think this is long overdue.

"The main problem is that people can't smoke in pubs and when they go outside they want to take their drinks with them."
If the order is passed, it will be an offence for anyone to drink in a public place in the boundary of Southgate, Jubilee Way, Front Street, Stuart Road, Trinity Street, Horsefair and back to Southgate.

Landlords, businesses and landowners have been consulted about the proposals.
Police and authority chiefs have worked together to prepare the ban, similiar to a successful one operating on Wakefield's nightlife hotspot Westgate since August 2006.

Coun Olivia Rowley, cabinet member for community safety, said: "Introducing the alcohol exclusion zone is part of a partnership response to reduce disorder, public nuisance and crime arising from alcohol consumption in the town centre.
"Wakefield's zone has contributed to significant reductions in alcohol-related crime.

"It also helps reassure the public and make the town centre a safer place for people to visit, encouraging a vibrant night time economy."
