LANDLORDS at a Pontefract pub have been praised for doubling their takings despite the recession.
Husband and wife team Allan and Sam Ward, publicans at the Chequerfield Hotel, have increased sales by more than 100 per cent since taking over the hostelry as first time landlords last July.
Pub company Admiral Taverns has recognised the duo as t
wo of its best-performing staff for their barrels of success, which they say is down to offering sports and entertainment.
Former rugby player Allan, 39, said: "We've got a new rugby team and also a football squad at the pub which are going really well.
"I think our success even in the credit crunch, when many pubs nationally are struggling, is down to us knowing the people and putting as much on for the Chequerfield community as we can.
"If anybody has ideas about what they think we can offer then we'll give them a go as well.
"We do really enjoy being landlords and so do the family."
Sam, 41, added: "Despite being industry newcomers we felt very confident about taking on the Chequerfield Hotel because we were familiar with the pub and many regulars.
"We'd encourage anyone who thinks they've got the passion and commitment to look at taking on a pub.
"It's not an easy life, but it's very rewarding watching your business grow and having the chance to be your own boss."
Gary Stafford, business development manager for Admiral Taverns, said the couple had set the bar for other landlords.
He added: "Sam and Allan are great role models for anyone who's ever wanted to run a pub.
"They've shown that pubs with potential can become booming businesses, even in the current economic climate.
"There are plenty of pubs like the Chequerfield Hotel trading extremely well and many vacant venues that offer fantastic opportunities for landlords who are willing to adapt and try something new."
