GARDENING prodigies can transform their school's disused wildlife patch into an oasis after impressing judges in a nationwide design competition.
Green-fingered members of the gardening club at Pontefract’s Holy Family and St Michael’s Catholic Primary School claimed second prize in the contest with special plans to revive the garden.
Organisers at Featherstone’s Victoria Garden Centre presented the pupils with vouchers and gardening gifts on Monday – which will help them turn the patch blooming lovely.
Teacher Angela Brook said: “When we saw the competition in the Express it spurred us on to redevelop the disused garden at our school.
“Our gardening club has been going for a year and has looked at what plants we will need to encourage insects into the patch.
“The money will help us do that and we’ve also got funding from elsewhere.”
Dozens of teams entered the contest, part of a national competition hosted by NWF Retail Ltd.
The winning team – from Manchester – will have their design recreated in their school.
