A DELICIOUS six-foot Dalek crafted from liquorice will join thousands of revellers at this year's Pontefract Liquorice Festival.
The alien adversary of television legend Doctor Who is being created by sixth form textiles students at Pontefract’s NEW college to “exterminate” visitors at the sweet-toothed extravaganza.

Donations of liquorice from Pontefract’s Haribo and Monkh
ill sweet factories will make up the tasty robot.

College tutor Amanda Bird, who will work with 40 youngsters to build the challenging design, said: “Our students are on exam leave at the moment but we’ll start work on the Dalek next week.

“We need lots of liquorice because we will make mistakes.

“It’s a nightmare material to work with as it melts when warm, snaps when cold and can’t go through the sewing machine.

“As Daleks are black we thought it would be a great, but unusual, addition to the festival.”

All sorts of tasty entertainment will be on offer, including a step back in time at Pontefract Castle, at this year’s festival on Saturday and Sunday July 12-13.

Medieval re-enactments, falconry demonstrations, history tours and crafts will thrill the crowds before the National Liquorice Day on Sunday.

The famous celebration starts with a spectacular street parade – featuring acrobats, live bands and a 30ft long inflatable pig which hosts shows inside its belly – followed by entertainment, liquorice talks and food.
