NEW College has been praised for the academic achievement of its students in an Ofsted report.
Inspectors visited the Pontefract college earlier this year and rated all areas as 'good'. They were impressed by the academic results achieved by students, as well as strong pastoral support given by staff.

Principal Peter Hillman said: "This is a testament to our core values at NEW College where we believe fervently in the student voice and putting our students at the heart of everything we do."

The inspection looked at areas including effectiveness of provision, capacity to improve, achievement and standards, quality of provision, leadership and management and equal opportunities.

Inspectors commented on the wide range of popular extra activities, including voluntary and charity work, sports facilities, healthy lifestyle choices and the good standard of learning resources.

They found students were able to make informed choices about their future beyond college thanks to helpful information on careers and higher education, and inspectors reported on the effective partnership arrangements with many local high schools, and developing links with local employers.

Other areas singled out for praise included curriculum planning – especially in English, psychology, law and business – new purpose-built accommodation, well-qualified staff, good additional learning support and the promotion of equality and diversity.

Communication between staff and students was regarded by inspectors as effective, with the college allowing students many opportunities to express their views and exert influence on a range of matters.
