THE hospital trust that runs Pontefract General Infirmary is among the worst in the country for cancelling operations at the last minute.
Department of Health figures show Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which also runs Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield and Dewsbury and District Hospital, cancelled 359 procedures at the last minute for non-clinical reasons from January to March.
They also reveal 55 of those patients were still waiting for treatment 28 days later.
In England, only Leeds Teaching Hospitals fared worse – cancelling 539 operations, with 101 patients still not treated within 28 days.
Angie Watson, chief operating officer at the trust which runs PGI, said: "Like many hospitals across the country that care for seriously ill patients, we have to balance the needs of patients who require planned surgery with those that are admitted to our hospitals in an emergency.
"Our hospitals are very busy and more than 1,000 patients need emergency treatment each week. We do not take decisions to postpone any operation lightly but sometimes, when a large number of patients are admitted as an emergency, we are not able to carry out some planned operations on the original date intended.
"In cases where we unfortunately have to postpone an operation, we remain committed to offering those patients a new date for their surgery within 28 days where possible."
