JAMES Evans believes Castleford's class of 2009 can do a gr-eight job.
The former Huddersfield and Bradford three-quarter, who met his new team-mates for training on Monday, says the Tigers squad has enough star quality to mount a serious challenge for the expanded top-eight play-offs next season.
Cas snapped up the Australian, who was a key member of the Bulls side that finished fifth this season, after he was cut by Bradford due to quota restrictions.
Reports since suggest he was one the Odsal club were keen to keep but the experienced utility player, who played under Tigers boss Terry Matterson at Canberra Raiders, had already set his heart on a move to the Jungle.
"After hearing about the recruitment drive, and with the players that were already here, I was excited to come," said Evans, who was the Bulls' coaching team's player of the year for 2008.
"There's a lot of skill in this side, they've a great coaching staff and there's no reason why we can't achieve our goals, as long as we put the hard work in.
"We had some big guys at Bradford but there are some big guys here now too.
"That's the engine room, they'll lay the foundation and there is the talent in the backs to bring it home.
"The timing was right for me. After speaking to Terry I was really keen to come here and I don't think I would have changed my mind, even if the quota system had been different. I want to establish myself in the side and have a good consistent year. And I want to play in the play-offs - and with the team they've got here, there's no reason why we can't."
Evans played in all three Castleford-Bradford games last season, including a tight final day clash that the Bulls shaded 18-16.
He said: "They were a tough side, especially at the Jungle. The last game could have gone either way and we were lucky to get a two-point win.
"As a player you know it's going to be tough coming to the Jungle.
"There's a good atmosphere and it's exciting for me to know that I'm going to have the crowd on my side down here for a change."
Evans and Michael Shenton, who were both given an extra week off, returned to training this week and they will shortly be joined by ex-St George utility player Rangi Chase.
Chase has obtained a work visa from Australian immigration and is set to arrive at the Jungle on Sunday.
That would leave only Sione Faumuina and Brent Sherwin to link up with the 2009 squad.
Fellow newcomer Dean Widders arrived at the Jungle last Thursday but did not train with the Tigers' first-team on Tuesday.
