Double bid gets hammer blow
METHLEY'S prospects of a Central Yorkshire League and cup double were dealt a hammer blow at the weekend.
Despite a sensational eight-wicket return from Mick Waite, they slipped further behind Premier Division leaders Wrenthorpe after a damaging 13-run defeat at Wakefield Thornes on Saturday.
And there was more heartbreak the following day when Jack Hampshire Cup hopes went up in smoke with a three-wicket reverse at Liversedge.
Methley's target of 133-8 could have been a lot worse but for late resistance from the tail.
They were 81-8 until young Jack Bridges and all-rounder Chris Leaf put on 52 in an unbroken ninth-wicket stand. Bridges top-scored with 47 and Leaf made 20 to give the visitors an outside chance.
But Liversedge belied their mid-table position in the league to scrape home and set up a final with Wakefield Thornes at Methley on August 17.
Alan Bentley (29) and Zulaarnain Haider (27) made vital runs up the order and Jonny Gould hit 21 not out to steer his side home after the reply slipped from 95-2 to 99-5.
Mick Waite and Chris Kippax bagged two wickets apiece for Methley, with Leaf and Vic Craven also bowling cheap spells.
Saturday's reverse at Wakefield Thornes saw third-place Methley slip 19 points leaders Wrenthorpe, who edged out Ossett.
Waite was unplayable, taking 8-24 from a remarkable 13.3-over stint that contained six maidens. And with Chris Kippax (2-41) in the wickets and both Leaf and Craven keeping it tight, Thornes were sent back for just 91.
But there was a sting in the tail for the visitors, who crumbled to 78 all out.
Opener John Proud made an unbeaten 35 but wickets tumbled regularly at the other end, with only Steve Bourne and Eugene Burzler making double figures, and the last seven batsmen contributed only nine runs in total.
Tushar Saha put the boot into Methley's title bid, taking 4-21 from 12 overs. Scott Wightman snared 3-36 and Derek Colqhoun took 1-2 to leave the visitors' facing the prospect of another potless campaign.
