PONTEFRACT Collieries' bid to bounce back from an opening day defeat to Rainworth was wrecked by the weather when Tuesday evening's NCE League First Division clash with Grimsby Borough was postponed.
After torrential rain, the pitch at the K Stadium was under pools of water and the game will now be played on Tuesday, September 23.
That meant frustration for boss Simon Houghton, who was keen to get back on the horse as soon as possible after his
side's 4-1 home reverse on Saturday.
Houghton, who missed Saturday's game due to family commitments, said yesterday: "Tuesday would have been an ideal opportunity to bounce back quickly. It was frustrating because the players couldn't wait for the game."
Ponte' made a bright start against Rainworth, with Craig Rouse netting inside four minutes.
But after the loss of Craig Edwards forced a reshuffle, the visitors took charge to lead 2-1 at the break, with goals from Alan Jefferies and Jermain Hollis.
Second-half strikes from Lee Soar and Malc Brown condemned Ponte' to defeat, although Houghton was not unduly worried.
The ex-Kinsley Boys boss has made a raft of changes at Skinner Lane and admits it will take time for his new-look side to gel.
"We knew it was going to be hard on Saturday. None of that team has played together before for more than 20 minutes, even during the pre-season friendlies.
"We started well by all accounts but then lost Craig Edwards injured. It changed the shape of the side and it seemed to change the shape of the game. It had a negative affect on a few of the players.
"Taking nothing away from Rainworth, they were starting to get on top anyway. They won again in midweek and they'll be there and thereabouts at the end of the season.
"But it will be probably be September time before we start seeing the fruits of what we're doing down here."
Ponte, who had pre-season fixtures against Nostell and Ossett Town called off due to waterlogged pitches, take a break from league action on Saturday when they facing a daunting trip to top Northern League Division One outfit Consett.
Said Houghton: "They're a good side, they finished second last year and have a kid up front, Mattie Moffat, who scored 56 goals for them last season."
Moffat hit a hat-trick as Consett beat Penrith 3-1 in their opening fixture on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Houghton continues to strengthen his squad. He said: "We've got two players coming down to train that have just been released by Barnsley and we're talking to one or two others.
"Saturday showed that some aren't ready yet for this level, or would benefit from a stint in the reserves."
