PONTEFRACT'S 16th annual 'Red Shirt Night' charity meeting tomorrow - the course's third and final evening fixture this summer - will raise cash for the Injured Jockeys Holiday Fund to again send a party of disabled ex- jockeys on holiday to Tenerife.
Famous for wearing his trademark red shirt at the races, former leading northern trainer Jack Berry MBE has been the major driving force over the years for this worthy cause in his capacity as a trustee of The Injured Jockeys Fund. One of his sons, S
am, was badly injured when riding at Sedgefield in 1985.
The most valuable race on Friday evening is The Antonia Deuters Handicap Stakes, an £18,000 contest for sprinters, sponsored by Antonia Deuters, who, along with her late husband Chris, was a long-standing owner with Jack Berry.
Racing starts at 6.35pm with a contest for two-year-olds supported by Countrywide Freight of Trafford Park, who return to support a race, while fillies and mares take part in The totesport.com Fillies' Handicap Stakes over one mile and a half. One mile is the distance in the second running of The Colstrope Cup Handicap Stakes - a contest supported by Yvonne Jacques and Beryl Jones
Featherstone-based Frontline Bathrooms extend their sponsorship to support The Frontline Bathrooms Maiden Handicap Stakes while leading northern racehorse owner and breeder Sir Neil Westbrook supports The Bollin Handicap Stakes, a race for sprinters over six furlongs. Sir Neil's horses are named with the Bollin prefix, for example Bollin Eric, the 2002 St. Leger winner.
A giant screen will help racegoers follow all of action, while an Abba tribute band provide the musical entertainment. There's also a selection of childrens' rides
As usual, the racecourse will make a donation to The Injured Jockeys Holiday Fund based on the number of runners in each race.
