ORGANISERS hailed Castleford Lock Lane's annual 9-a-side tournament a huge success after record-breaking numbers turned up from junior clubs across the county.
Almost 450 young players - a new high - went head-to-head in a feast of open rugby, thrilling the big crowds that snarled up traffic in Castleford town centre on Saturday afternoon.
The event was played in terrific spirit, with all the players earning top marks for both their skills and sporting attitude.
After a series of round-robin matches the top four sides of each age group entered the knockout stages to decide the finalists.

A Liam Hands try in the final minute of extra-time enabled Lock Lane to edge out Stanley Rangers in a superb under-12 final. Stanley stand-off Jordan Howden was awarded the player of the tournament for the age group.
Unbeaten Lock Lane's overcame a strong Castleford Panthers side in the under-11 decider, with Lane's Scott Fleming voted best player on show.

Featherstone Lions rising star Tava Koli picked up the under-10s player of the tournament trophy after helping the side pick off Methley Warriors in the final.
But under-dogs Methley were not disgraced.
After drawing their first game with Cas Panthers, thanks to a long-range try from Thomas Smith and excellent defence by Jordan Lewis, Callum Sanderson and Oliver Hanmer, Methley beat Lions in a closely-fought group game. Smith crossed twice after devastating play from Nyal Harding, Connor Wood and Natasha Brown.

Jim Lloyd, Connor Wood and Smith got the tries to do a 'double' over East Leeds - with James Firth and Brandon Robbins also prominent - and Smith again did the business to see off Cas Panthers in another tightly-fought encounter.
Excellent
Methley fought hard and played some excellent rugby in the final but the bigger Lions side, with Koli to the fore, had the final word. Methley scored 22 tries in total during the competition, leaking only 15.

The under-nines final was a tense affair that saw the hosts edge out East Leeds. Lane's Cameron Smith was player of the tournament.
All the under-eights teams played some sparkling rugby but it was Castleford Panthers who held off determined Lock Lane to deservedly take the spoils.
Panthers won six of their seven games, drawing the other. They beat Oulton Raiders in the semi-final but were pushed all the way by their derby rivals in a tense final.
Josh Farr, Josef Fella, Jack Crane, Kieran Martin, Jake Sweeting and Charlie Sykes were the side's try-scorers but this was a real team effort, with Lewis Findlay, Harry Archdale, Matthew Sykes and Luke Hudson also playing key roles.

Sweeting was named player of the tournament but he was pushed all the way by Lane's stand-out Luke Hands.
Featherstone Lions, the smallest of the six teams in the under-eights competition, enjoyed mixed luck.
Defending courageously, they won one game, drew one and narrowly lost the other three.

Bailey Barker, Nathan Haytack, Regan Roberts and Patrick Harrison were superb defensively against Panthers, with Josh Maden, Connor Paver and Tom Sweating shining on attack.
Lions' victory came against East Leeds, with the excellent tackling of Barker, Maden and Alfie Brown laying the platform for Roberts and Paver to grab tries.

They drew with Lock Lane after a thrilling clash. Roberts and Paver again crossed, while Brandon Boldy, Jack Appleyard, Maden and Haytack shone on defence.
Organisers this week thanked Castleford Tigers players Adam Fletcher, Ryan McGoldrick and Michael Shenton for presenting the trophies, Castleford & district Referees Society for providing the match officials and St John's Ambulance for the first aid.
