CASTLEFORD coach Terry Matterson is "excited" about locking horns with engage Super League leaders Wigan Warriors at The Jungle on Sunday (3.30).
The Tigers ended a four-match losing run with last weekend's 20-16 victory at Catalans Dragons and Matterson now hopes they can back it up by achieving their first home win in their first Sunday fixture this season.
"We are playing Wigan who are the form team in the competition so the challenge doesn't come any bigger but we have no reason to be scared of them. We are excited about playing Wigan and we have no reason to fear them," said Matterson.
"Wigan are very buoyant at the moment and understandably so and I'm sure they'll bring plenty of supporters on Sunday.
"However, we've been very close in our two home games far. We played against a very good Warrington side and made a couple of mistakes and that was the difference in that game and everyone saw what happened against Hull KR."
Wigan are the early pacesetters after winning five of their opening six matches under their new Australian coach Michael Maguire but Matterson is not surprised to see them at the top of the table.
He said: "If you look what Wigan have done over the last two years they have been one game away from the Grand Final and one game away from the Challenge Cup final as well. They've obviously done a bit of tweaking and they've got players who have matured.
"They're very healthy - they really haven't got any injuries - and they are playing with a lot of confidence so it's our job to try to knock that down."
Wigan winger Shaun Ainscough, who is on loan at Castleford, will not be allowed to play on Sunday as part of the deal that brought him to The Jungle.
Matterson is keen to extend Ainscough's loan period which ends after the home game against Crusaders the following Friday.
He said: "It will be Wigan's call. He's happy here and it's working well for both clubs because he's getting experience. I can't see any reason why Wigan wouldn't extend the loan.
"If they have an injury crisis they are well within their rights not to extend it but we are pretty confident we'll be able to come up with a deal."
The Tigers hope to have centre James Evans back this weekend after he missed the Catalans match with a stomach muscle injury.
If Evans returns, Kirk Dixon is set to switch to the wing in place of Ainscough.
Matterson said: "We are hopeful about James Evans and we'll make a decision on him later in the week."
The Cas boss was pleased with the performances of debutants Mike Cooper and John Davies in Perpignan.
On-loan signing Cooper scored Castleford's first try and youngster Davies also played his part.
Matterson said: "I was really pleased for Mike. He got a try and did good other things. It was a really solid debut.
"John probably didn't make as much of an impact as Coops but it was a great experience for him. He had the opporunity to play in a winning team on his first-grade debut and to see what it's all about.
"It's a different level and a different pace and John will be a lot better for that so I'm really pleased for him. He's now dipped his toes in the water and knows what he needs to do to play at the top level and it's part of his progression."
Matterson was also delighted with the contributions of Rangi Chase and Stuart Jones against Catalans.
He said: "Rangi really took control and took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second-half.
"He created a lot of problems for them and his kicking game was a real key for us. They really didn't get down in our half and the only try they got in the second-half was a long-range effort.
"I thought Stuart Jones's impact off the bench after about 25 minutes was pretty telling as well. He really got us going forward and made a big difference."
