COACH Daryl Powell was pleased with the way Featherstone shaped up in their first run out of the season against Halifax.
Rovers, with seven off-season signings on duty, ran in seven tries against their Co-operative Championship rivals.
"I thought there were lots of positives out there," said Powell (pictured).
"The attitude everyone showed was great and that is the main thing in these games because it can be difficult when you've had your Christmas dinner the day before to get yourself up for the game. But I thought we did that pretty well and the guys really applied themselves.
"I would have liked a few less points conceded but I thought we controlled field position quite well and dominated territorially and showed great attitude in defence, although I think we can be a bit tighter than that.
"I think it gives us an indication of what has stuck in the players' minds in terms the work we have put in.
"We have done a fair bit of work physically and I think the guys looked pretty good for this stage of the pre-season.
"Tactically and technically we have done a lot of work.
"We did not make many errors and we were pretty solid in control of the ball and organisationally we were tidy to say we were a new group.
"It's a whole new list of calls for the players so I think from that point of view for the first game it was good.
"You would have to say it was mainly positive but we will get sharper and more fluent.
"It gives you a look at what we've practiced and gives you a look at individual players and traits when they are on the field and that is one of the most important things. It also gives the players a look at each other, particularly the new players who have come in.
"I think from a leadership point of view there are new players who have come in and it is a chance to make sure they work together and there is a fair bit of synergy there and I thought there was against Halifax."
Powell was pleased with the contribution of Iestyn Harris and the other new signings.
"I thought the new guys slotted in well. Iestyn was really solid defensively and did some smart things with the ball. He is a dominant character on the field and that shone through," said Powell.
"I thought Stuart Kain was good at the back and looked pretty sharp and Gareth Swift when he came on did a pretty good job.
"One of the things I would like the players to do is to play what they see in front of them.
"Obviously you want success in terms of what the players deliver but you also want players to express themselves and play what they see. If they are successful with it then everybody wins.
"There are times when you have got to be smart and bring your game back in and I thought we did that quite well against Halifax.
"I thought we were pretty clever the way we approached it.
"You are always looking to step up your preparations and over the next two or three weeks I think we need to step up again and then as you get closer to the season you start to taper down."
