FORTRESS Moor Lane was conquered for the second successive game in Saturday's hard-fought North East Two tussle.
It was a match Pontefract should have won. They produced an enormous effort, particularly in the second half, but failed to give their backs enough ball and penalties enabled Carlisle to build a valuable cushion whenever they came under threat.
Pont
e' made a good start but knocked-on at a line-out to lose impetus. A similar error led to Carlisle taking the lead from a blind-side scrum move, No.8 Brunton scoring a converted try.
The home side struck back when fly-half Glen Boyd spotted space behind the defence and kicked downfield. The visitors' full-back fumbled and winger Rob Nowak hacked on to score in the corner.
The back-row of Rich Scott, Nick Vaughan and Jon Lowery were getting into their stride now but Carlisle weathered the storm to extend their lead with a penalty after Boyd was penalised for a high tackle.
Mark Cahill took a heel against the head to set up a promision raid but from a loose ball the visitors countered to score a second try. An Andy Dean penalty chipped into the arrears but Carlisle replied in kind after Ponte' were caught offside and Ponte' trailed 8-18 at the break.
The Moor Laners made a terrific start to the second half after Cahill's surge, supported by Rich Maw and Jake Brady. Matty Hargreaves and Boyd handled to feed centre Nick Dykes, who eluded the first tackle and twisted away from the cover to score at the side of the posts. Dean's conversion cut the gap to three points.
A clean take from Lowery and a drive from captain Matty Williams made more headway but the raid broke down and Ponte' were undone as the visitors again went blind from a line to open a 23-15 lead.
A Dean penalty gave Ponte' hope and Rich Taylor's half-break gave Dykes a sniff but another 50-50 call went the way of the away side, who kicked the penalty.
Ponte' pulled out all the stops in the closing stages but solid defence held them out and they had only a Dean penalty to show for a committed second-half effort.

Pontefract's young guns conquered adversity to send Huddersfield packing.
A pulled hamstring to Tim Williamson in the warm-up, a broken collarbone for Craig Emmerson and a nasty head injury to influential Phil Brain meant proceedings did not go entirely to plan.
The front-row of Ricky Hunter, Phil Brain and Dave Padgett laid a solid scrum base the rookie second-rows James Brownsword and Jack Plant won all the early collisions.
A trademark break from young stand-off Chris Sante sent powerhouse Lee Holmes under the posts. Sante goaled. Centre Holmes crashed through his opposite number to feed Craig Potter, who in turn sent Sante to the posts.
Wily skipper Rich Fletcher chipped over the top for newcomer Jonny Morton to score in the corner and moments later Morton was in again, this time after a searing break from Holmes.
Ponte' led 22-0 at the break but with their wind in their faces in the second period, it was tighter on the restart and full-back Mark Catterall scored their only points from an off-load by Moorhouse.
Bateman had another solid game but best were man of the match Craig Potter, Sante, Brain and second-half substitute Stu Hayes, who showed real promise.
Ponte' entertain Cas seconds at Moor Lane on Saturday. Spectators welcome.
