FEATHERSTONE'S opening Northern Rail Cup game at Hunslet Hawks - postponed last weekend because of a frozen pitch at South Leeds stadium - has been re-arranged for Thursday, March 4 (8pm).
It will be played after Featherstone's other NRC matches against Sheffield, Leigh and Rochdale and after their opening Co-operative Championship clash against Batley Bulldogs on February 28.
Rovers coach Daryl Powell said: "The re-arranged date is the Thursday before we play in the Challenge Cup.
"The only other date that was available to us was next week and I didn't want to play the Hunslet game in between playing Sheffield and Leigh which are going to be really challenging fixtures for us."
Last Sunday's match was called off after a 12.15pm pitch inspection.
Said Powell: "I went to the pitch inspection just to see what the conditions were like. I put some studs on and went out onto the pitch. I tried taking some steps with my boots on and it was really slippy and rock hard.
"As soon as the referee came he had a quick phone call with Stuart Cummings and decided that the temperatures weren't going to get any higher and it was unlikely the pitch was going to soften.
"I think it would have been dangerous for players to play on.
"I was desperate to play the game because the one thing you don't want at the moment is to be playing mid-week games because as soon you go into the season it puts too much pressure on players."
It is the second year running Featherstone have had their opening Northern Rail Cup game postponed. They had to play Leigh in a re-arranged midweek match last season.
Powell said: "I think Rugby League have got to have a look at this for next year because it's now two seasons on the trot that our first game has been postponed.
"Commonsense tells you that in our climate this is a tough time of year. Obviously, the balance to that is clubs have to earn money, but it would have cost Hunslet financially at the weekend having the game called off."
