FEATHERSTONE'S recently-arrived trio of loan signings will be thrown straight in at the deep end (writes Ian Nutbrown).
Wakefield Wildcats half-back Liam Finn and Huddersfield pair Stephen Jones and Jason Southwell are in Rovers' 17-strong squad for Sunday's trip to Hull KR as head coach Gary Price continues to wrestle a mounting injury crisis.
Props Nathan Sykes (gashed face, Ian Tonks (shoulder) and Jimmy Carlton (sternum) were casualties of Sunday's Powergen Challenge Cup drubbing by Bradford and with Steve Dooler and Adam Hayes also facing late fitness tests, Price may be forced to travel without the core of this season's pack.
"It's too early to say which ones will be fit for Sunday but at the moment it would be a bonus to get any of them on the pitch," said Price, who will delay naming his side until after this evening's Senior Academy clash against Castleford Tigers U 21s at Post Office Road.
"The situation is spiralling out of control again and I can't afford to play anyone who's not 100 per cent fit. Ian Tonks has battled through the last month and it may be a case he doesn't play for a couple of weeks to get his shoulder right.
"But Carlton, Tonks and Sykes are all carrying injuries, Dooler and Adam Hayes are still injured and we're without Jarratt and Blakeway. That's virtually my entire pack so I might have to take a calculated risk."
Ex-Halifax half-back Finn, former RU international Jones and Southwell, a product of the Giants Academy scheme, are have all joined Rovers on one-month deals, with the possibility of extending. Price has not ruled out a permanent swoop for Finn, whose opportunities have been limited at Belle Vue.
Said Price: "They're on a month's loan initially but could stay longer. Huddersfield coach Jon Sharp wants Jones and Southwell to learn the game by playing it a higher level. He sees both of them making his first-team next year.
"Liam's on loan with a view to a permanent deal. He's out of contract at the end of the year so the ball's firmly in his court. He hasn't played much first-team football since playing Super League with Halifax a couple of years ago where he was very highly-regarded. He's had limited chances at Wakefield after finding himself behind Jamie Rooney, Ben Jeffries and now Sam Obst."
Southwell, 19, is an explosive prop while Jones, who scored a hat-trick for Giants' U 21s in a Senior Academy grading game at Rovers last month, is a utility back.
His preferred position is centre but Price is unlikely to displace Danny Maun or Richard Newlove - two of his most capable and consistent performers this season - and Jones could find himself at full-back or on the wing.
The 22-year-old comes highly-rated, having played rugby union for England's U 18s and U 19s and with Scotland's U 21s. He was with Newcastle Falcons RU before joining the Giants.
Rovers visit Craven Park on the back of a record-breaking 80-14 defeat by the Bulls and a disappointed Price is demanding a huge improvement.
"I just think one or two players wasted a really big opportunity at the weekend," he said. "Some players went up in my estimation, some came down a little bit. I think the players owe themselves a big performance this weekend after some very ordinary displays last Sunday.
"We beat Hull KR twice over there last year so we know we can beat them but I think this weekend's more about us."
Meanwhile, Rovers want supporters to become involved in improving the marketing side of the club.
Fans are being invited to join a sub-committee which will come up with marketing policies in association with the club's Board. The sub-committee will help decide policies and be involved in their implementation.
Featherstone Rovers Supporters Club are running a bus to Hull KR on Sunday, leaving the ground at 1.15 pm. To book ring 01924-822426.
