Rovers shaping up well for new campaign

FEATHERSTONE'S pre-season regime will put the club in ideal shape to challenge the big-spenders of National League, Daryl Powell said this week.
The first-team squad has embarked on the second block of an intensive training programme aimed at raising fitness, strength and speed to new levels.
Boss Powell (pictured) is putting his players through the mill in a bid to make Rovers a force in both the Northern Rail Cup and Co-operative National League One.
Twice-daily sessions - the first starting at 6.30am - rigorous weights and strength regimes, sprint training and weekly hill-running have become the norm as Powell looks to make his side competitive against NL1 full-time outfits such as Widnes.
"I wanted to create a professional environment, while also recognising that the guys work during the day. We had to make a big difference in terms of strength and conditioning and the only way to do that was to split the sessions," said the Rovers head coach.
"After morning sessions they take good nutrition and supplements, then they've been coming back in on a night time. That's a shorter session, which enables them to recover and also give them time with their families.
"It's no secret we'll be playing full-time teams and we have to try and bridge the gap by maximising the potential of the players.
"We've still got the weights three mornings a week and in the first month we focused heavily on core skill. We're now looking at structure and working hard on our calling structure for attack and defence."
Rovers' first competitive outing is still more than two month's away - the group stages of the NRC are expected to start in early February.
And while Powell is already seeing improved levels, there is more to come.
"They were tested at the end of the first block and I saw development - and I expect to see more at the end of the current block.
"This is a crucial part of pre-season because we need to get the maximum benefit out of what we're doing in the gym. In the season it's all about maintenance but I'm looking for growth at the moment and I'm really happy with where we're at.
"The players are working exceptionally hard in the gym and on the field. I couldn't ask any more of them."
Meanwhile, Wayne McHugh has joined National League Two outfit York Knights.
The 28-year-old utility back returned to train with Rovers at the end of last season after serving a jail term. But the club withdrew the offer of a new contract over concerns the ex-Rochdale and Dewsbury winger could not meet pre-season training commitments.
Latest £500 winners in the Rovers treasure chest lottery are J. M. O'Neil (B2115), R. Bradburn (S0034), M. Hutchinson (E4400), M. Davison (D4806), A. Woodhead (F6569). Junction meal voucher: J. Flynn (V1834).
