CASTLEFORD'S teenage star Joe Westerman took time out to officially launch the regional stages of the Carnegie Champion Schools tournament.
The 18-year-old back-row (pictured centre) played in the Airedale High School team that reached the national final three times, including a historic cup victory only three years ago.
The tournament, which attracts more than 20,000 students each year, began in September and has now reached the area level.
The top schools from the regional competition will progress to the national stages, which reaches its climax in London on Carnegie Challenge Cup weekend. The year seven boys' final is played at Wembley as a curtain-raiser to the cup final and Westerman said: "To play at Wembley is a lifelong ambition for many players with only a lucky few ever getting the chance to step on the hallowed turf. The fact that 11 year olds up and down and country can get to play at the world famous stadium by reaching the Year 7 final is fantastic."
Castleford High, who have taken six teams to London for the past two years, Airedale HS and Freeston HS have all reached the regional stages and had representatives at the Jungle launch.
