Glasshoughton Welfare . . 2
Staveley MW . . 5
WHEN new-signing Jordon lodge drove Glasshoughton into a fourth-minute lead in Saturday's NCE League First Division tussle, it looked as if Welfare were set to continue their slow but steady improvement.
But things went pear-shaped from then on as the visitors kicked-on to secure a flattering victory.
Lodge's goal was a superb piece of finishing in a one-on-one situation with Staveley stopper Martin Vearney.
But minutes later a simple chance to dou
ble the lead went begging and from then on Welfare went from bad to worse.
On 15 minutes Blaine Kellett gave away a needless penalty with a blatant handball, Lee Gregory converted to level.
And a minute later slack defending enabled Ryan Damms to put the visitors ahead.
It was 3-1 on the 40-minute mark when Gregory finished a five-man move by giving home keeper Luke Beedle no chance.
Ian Greenwood rifled a 25-yard shot into the top corner to bring the home side back into contention but generally Staveley called the tune on the restart.
Jamie Smith reacted first against a static defence to hit a fourth.
Welfare used all their substitutes in an attempt to rescue the game, with Callum Wylie replacing the limping Paul Nodder, Micky Amos going on for Greenwood and Jack Kirk introduced in place of Adam Varley.
But although Amos struck the foot of the upright with a superb drive, it was Staveley who completed the scoring in the final minute, Judd Colley with time and space to lob Beedle.
Glasshoughton visit Worsbrough Bridge on Saturday, still eleven points adrift at the bottom.
Welfare: Beedle, Price, Kellett, Nodder (Wylie), Hazeldean, Greenwood (Amos), Varley (Kirk), Carr, Lodge, Riding, Harrison.
