Glasshoughton Welfare ..0
Tadcaster Albion ..1
THESE NCE League First Division rivals met for the second time in eight days and the starting line-ups told the story of the season so far.
Albion showed only two changes from the previous Saturday but Glasshoughton showed no less than six different faces as new manager Phil Riding shuffled his pack to find that elusive first win.
Strike pair Paul Nodder and Craig Bateson were introduce
d in an bid to find the firepower so desperately needed.
Early play favoured Tadcaster and only an outstanding save by Luke Beedle prevented Doug Goodwin giving them the lead. Josh O'Neill headed the subsequent corner against a post.
Goodwin was causing problems and was to the fore of several promising raids, well dispelled by Beedle and his back-line.
Yet it was ex-Glasshoughton keeper Dane Whittleston who made the crucial save of the half after Thomas Carr put Bateson clear. Moments later Whittleston diverted a Nathan Hazelden header over his bar.
They were key interventions as seven minutes later Chris Harkin raced clear to put Tadcaster ahead.
Little impact
Welfare threatened spadmodically in the second half but the visitors generally remained in control.
John Coppinger replaced a tiring Bateson but made little impact, except to receive a cautione for words exchanged with an assistant referee.
Riding rang the changes, with Carr sacrificed after running himself into the ground, and Coppinger and Nigel Croad were shoved up front in a last-ditch effort to earn a point but they had little support, bar the occasional foray down the left from the skilful Sam Harrison, who saw too little of the ball.
The final chance of the game fell to Croad, whose shot from the edge of the box was deflected wide for a non-productive corner.
Glasshoughton are now cast adrift at the bottom but have three home games on the trot, starting with a visit from high-flying neighbours Pontefract on Saturday.
Welfare have gone 34 competitive games without a win but as Riding's methods impact on his new side, there is hope they could trouble their derby rivals, who have not tasted defeat in seven games.
Improved form and increased optimism at Leeds Road suggest Welfare are not far off turning the corner - and where better to start than against their arch-rivals.
Glasshoughton: Beedle, Price, Hazelden, Croad, Coombes, Amos, Shelley, Carr (Cooke), Harrison, Nodder (Kellett), Bateson (Coppinger).
