THE long-established Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Squash Open is the focus of the world tour for both men and women this week.
Lee Beachill has had to withdraw through injury but Pontefract club-mates James Willstrop, Vanessa Atkinson and Saurav Ghosal are all in action.
Willstrop (pictured) arrives there from Singapore and Malaysia where he has been carrying out a series of exhibitions. He faces a tough first round match with Mohammed Abbas (Egypt).
He will be hoping that an injection into a troublesome ankle injury will have improved his ability to extend himself.
Atkinson is seeded to meet 2007 world champion Rachel Grinham in the quarter-finals. Ghosal plays in the qualifiers.
The semi-finals and final will be played in the glamorous setting of an all-glass court in Hong Kong harbour.
India's number one rated woman player Joshna Chinappa, who spends a lot of her time at Pontefract for training purposes, won her first women's tour title in Kuala Lumpur, beating Wee Wern Low (Malaysia) 3-0 in the final. Chinappa was the number three seed.
After a blank week Pontefract teams return to Yorkshire League action.
The firsts go to Hallamshire, with Hardinder Pal Sandhu, back from India, leading the team. The second string entertain Chapel Allerton and the thirds and fourths host Huddersfield and Leeds University respectively.
National Club competitions are underway and Pontefract's over-35 side, captained by Alan Norrish, will take on Wigan at Pontefract on Sunday.
The men's team have a first round match against Hallamshire and the under-19 mixed, who won the title last season, face Abbeydale.
The Pontefract women's team, the reigning champions, are exempt as the holders and the men's team exempt as the host club when the championships will be played at Pontefract in 2010.
Both will be wanting to prove themselves by winning national crowns but much depends on availability, especially with the men's team.
