A DINNER menu, autographed by England’s successful 1956 Ashes cricketers, is set to raise funds at Pontefract’s Cancer Research Fund shop.

The menu is signed by Jim Laker (pictured), captain Peter May, Ken Barrington, Doug Insole, Colin Cowdrey, Trevor Bailey and Alan Oakman.

England’s 1956 series win against the touring Australians is most notable for off-spinner Jim Laker’s 46 wickets - a record for a five Test series - including all ten wickets in the second innings of the fourth Test at Old Trafford.

The autographed menu is from the England team’s stay at Harrogate’s Old Swan Hotel during the third Test at Headingley which they won by an innings and 42 runs.

Pontefract shop manageress Lesley Bruce said: “We found the signed menu in some books we had been donated.

“It was in the middle of an old cricket annual.

“I am aiming to hold a silent auction and sell it to the highest bidder to raise money for cancer research.”

Anyone who wishes to make a bid can contact Lesley at the shop on 01977-600313.
