Castleford snap up veteran Gilmour

VETERAN second rower Lee Gilmour is Castleford's fourth major signing for 2013.

The 34-year-old former Great Britain international will join the Tigers from Huddersfield Giants on a two-year deal, lining up alongside Jake Webster, Michael Shenton and Jamie Ellis at Probiz Coliseum next season.

Gilmour signed a new two-year contract at Huddersfield just 12 months ago but has been released to enable him join up with Tigers coach Ian Millward, who nine years ago took him from Bradford to St Helens, where he enjoyed World Club Challenge, Super League and Challenge Cup glory.

Millward said: "Lee comes with a unique CV and we were in need of someone with that experience and knowledge.

"He will not only be a valuable player, he'll also be a great mentor for our younger players. He's a very good communicator on and off the field and I'm delighted he'll be coming to Cas.

"People should dismiss his age as he's been very much injury-free throughout his career and has very good leg speed. He has the capabilities of emulating Steve Menzies well into his late 30s."

Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis said: "Lee has been one of our best signings for many a year at Huddersfield but it would be wrong of us to stand in his way when a longer-term arrangement was available to him to continue playing at the highest level than he had currently guaranteed here.

"In addition the move eases some salary cap pressures and will enable us to look to strengthen the 2013 squad which Paul Anderson is putting together."
