Castleford Tigers fans have come in for praise for the way they roared the team through to their opening day victory against Bradford Bulls at the Provident Stadium.

Supporters travelled in numbers – estimated by some at the ground to be as many as 2,000 – and their backing has been noted by players, coaching staff and directors.

Cas are now looking for more of this support and hoping that the positive feel round the club can help them get a bumper gate for the first home game of the new season when French club Catalan Dragons visit the Mend-A-Hose Jungle this Sunday.

Tigers head coach Daryl Powell said: “I’m hoping for a good turn out. I think there’s a feel-good factor around the place and we’ve got to make sure that’s maintained after the weekend.

“We’re after a really good performance and hopefully we’ll take another step in the right direction.

“The fans were outstanding at Bradford. I was a little bit surprised when I saw how many people were behind the posts. It was a fantastic turn out so I was obviously delighted that so many people went away from home. I hope they enjoyed what they saw.”

Castleford’s board of directors paid tribute to the fans that travelled to Bradford.

Chief executive Steve Gill said on behalf of the board: “I wanted to take the opportunity to thank the tremendous Tigers support that travelled to Bradford.

“We expected a large following and with around 1,500 Cas fans in attendance you truly did not disappoint.

“As usual the vocal support was outstanding as you created the atmosphere which helped the players and coaching staff on their way to a win which gave us an excellent start to the season.

“The board don’t doubt that this will be continued throughout the year. As you know every game matters and we know you’ll be there to support the black and amber.

“The next match for us is this weekend in our first outing at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle this season. We’d like you to pack the stadium to give the players the ultimate support as they look for two wins from as many matches.”
