CUTSYKE ARL played the Army team for the third year in the BDR Craig Hopson Memorial Trophy.

The Army won the first game 18-16 the second 24-22 so a close contest was expected.

Army raced into a 10-0 lead, but a break from Gareth Davies, releasing Richard Caunce into the corner allowed Cutsyke to pull one back.

A kick off the side of the boot by veteran Matty Willis then fooled the Army defence with full-back Aaron Henry collecting and scoring under the sticks. But the forces team were 20-10 ahead at half-time.

A score early in the second half stretched the lead to 26-10 before Cutsyke rallied with some fierce defending and strong running. They got on a roll with tries from Omar Al Wari and a 80-metre solo effort from Henry to pull it back to 26-20 with eight minutes left.

However, with two minutes remaining the Army kicked a penalty under the sticks to put the game to bed.

MOM went to Henry, but there were solid showings from Spears, Davies, Pie and Gornall. Funds raised at the match were more than £1,100 and went to the Army Benevolent Fund.
