Rovers forward Spears goes under the knife

FEATHERSTONE Rovers forward Tim Spears could miss pre-season matches because of a shoulder operation.

The former Castleford, Batley and Dewsbury player (pictured) requires surgery on a labral tear on the cartilage around the shoulder.

“We’ve had some issues to sort out before we could get Tim in for the operation. He’ll be in for the operation pretty soon but he could be out for a while because it’s not the best injury,” said Powell.

“He could miss some of the pre-season games. It’s a difficult injury and he’s been struggling with it for a while.”

Scrum-half Liam Finn is set to be given a rest during the close-season.

Finn was an ever-present for Rovers last season and also played for Ireland after Featherstone’s campaign finished.

Powell said: “Liam has had an issue with his elbow which is long-standing. He’s had that cleaned out but he played for Ireland as well so he’s going to need a bit of a break.”

Centre Sam Smeaton is recovering after sustaining a serious knee injury in training shortly before the Co-operative Championship Grand Final against Sheffield.

Said Powell: “Sam ruptured his patellar tendon which is the tendon on the front of the knee that joins the knee cap to the lower leg. It’s a three and a half to four month injury.

“He’s now on the road to recovery and he’s working hard with our new physio Matty Crowther.”
