Rovers score eight tries in first pre-season game

FEATHERSTONE Rovers won their first pre-season fixture impressively by beating Hunslet Hawks 42-6 in the annual Gareth Swift Memorial match at Bigfellas Stadium on New Year’s Day.

New signings Ben Hellewell, Steve Crossley and Tom Hodson all scored tries in the opening 15 minutes as Rovers powered to a 32-0 interval lead.

Greg Worthington, Ian Hardman, Liam Mackay, Kyran Johnson and Matty Brook were Featherstone’s other try scorers.

Kyle Briggs kicked four goals and Johnson landed one.

Hunslet came far more into the game in the second-half. Former Featherstone half-back Danny Grimshaw scored their their solitary try.

Featherstone Rovers: Hardman; Hodson, Hellewell, Worthington, Johnson; Hepworth, Briggs; Crossley, Ellis, England, Ormondroyd, Bryan, Dale. Subs: Lockwood, Brook, Mackay, A Finn, Jackson, Scott, Day, Bostock, Pickerill.

Hunslet Hawks: Kain; Mapals, Brickwood, Welham, Pryce; Ansell, Helliwell; Bowring, Windley, Payne, Clayton, Watson, Haughey. Subs: Grimshaw, Yates, Menzies, Oakes, Lewis, March.

Half-time: 32-0.

Referee: Dave Merrick (Pontefract).

Attendance: 865.
