Castleford youngsters are boxing clever

Preparations for the forthcoming season took an unusual turn for Castleford Town Golds junior players when instead of a football they were handed boxing gloves.

Golds manager Roger Newbould came up with the idea of some fun alternative training and took his players to the Airedale Boxing Club, run by his friend, Mark Whitham.

The team was put through a warm-up in the ring before gloves were then fitted. The training session was non-contact, however, and was used purely as fitness.

“Mark had the youngsters doing an intense circuit session and each lad enjoyed doing the different excercises, with the music blaring,” said Golds manager Roger.

“Just by the look of sheer fatigue on their faces Mark really did his job and at the end every lad was smiling and saying how cool it had been. Even players’ younger brothers who came to watch got in on the action.

“Mark commented on how well the kids had done and the respect shown was second to none. It was a great way to spend a training session and we hope to do it again real soon. Many thanks to Mark Whitham for taking the lads.”

The Airedale gym is back open on August 20, and opens Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm. Old and new boxers welcome, contact Mark on 07502 243207.
