Glasshoughton Welfare started their pre-season ‘friendlies’ programme with handy work outs in visits to Silsden FC and Billingham Synthonia.
Although beaten in both matches they proved to be good contests that will bring the players on for the forthcoming season proper.
In a lively encounter at North West Counties side Silsden, Welfare fielded a squad with a number of new faces and on an evening more suited to cricket they gave a good account of themselves despite going down narrowly 2-1 with new striker Callum Walker scoring.
Visiting a much stronger looking team at Billingham, Welfare again introduced a number of trialists, who contributed to a keenly fought game. Daz Young scored Glasshoughton’s only goal with a penalty as they lost 4-1.
Welfare take on more strong opposition with the visits of Lincoln United on Saturday (3pm) and Ossett Town next Tuesday (7.30pm).
On the opening day of the NCE League season, Saturday, August 10, Welfare are without a fixture, but they open their 2013-14 Premier Division campaign with an away trip to Staveley MW on Wednesday, August 14 (7.45pm).
