LEEDS United have signed their second goalkeeper of the summer after completing a deal to bring in Preston stopper Andy Lonergan on a three-year contract.
Lonergan, 27, arrives for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £200,000, and will compete with former Blackpool keeper Paul Rachubka, signed earlier in the summer, for the number one spot.
Manager Simon Grayson said that although initial negotiations broke down Lonergan had been his first choice to replace Kasper Schmeichel.
He told the Leeds United website: “Contrary to the speculation we weren`t chasing a lot of goalkeepers, Andy was always my number one choice, and I`m delighted we could bring him here.
“It adds competition to our goalkeeping position which is what I wanted to do. Andy knows Paul has done well in pre-season so the competition will be good. I`m looking forward to the battle between the two of them.”
United are in Norway for a friendly with Sandefjord tonight, before completing their pre-season programme at home to Newcastle on Sunday.
