Pontefract Collieries returned to winning ways and kept an encouraging clean sheet as they beat Eccleshill United 1-0 at home in Division One of the Toolstation NCE League on Saturday.
A single goal from Mark Whitehouse 10 minutes from time proved enough to give Colls all three points.
It was only their second win in their last five matches and ended a blip that had seen them suffer defeats in their previous two league games when they had conceded seven goals.
Despite the victory Ponte remain in seventh place in the table, but they have games in hand on all bar one of the teams above them and have closed the gap on top two sides AFC Emley and Clipstone, who both suffered surprise home defeats last weekend.
Going into the Christmas period Colls are eight points behind leaders Emley with a game in hand and much still to play for in the second half of the season.
This Saturday Pontefract are away to 14th-placed Hall Road Rangers (kick-off 3pm) with a quick return game at the Collieries’ ground the following Saturday, also kicking off at 3pm.
