This evening’s horse race meeting at Pontefract has been abandoned following torrential rain that left the track unfit for racing.

A six-race card was due to start at 6.40pm, but it has been abandoned after a deluge amounting to half an inch of rain hit the track in just 15 minutes at 12.15pm.

The ground was changed from soft to heavy, but the decision was made to call off the meeting after an inspection took place at 2pm.

A tweet from Pontefract races said: “Unfortunately racing has been abandoned tonight. Further rain has left parts of the course waterlogged. Gutted.”
