Castleford Tigers earned a fifth round home tie at home to top Championship side Sheffield Eagles after producing a strong second half display to ease nerves at Batley Bulldogs.

The Tigers were only 12-6 up at half-time with prospects of a cup shock still on the cards, but took control coming down the famous Mount Pleasant slope after the break to run out 48-10 winners in the end.

Batley players were applauded off at the end after playing their part in a decent cup tie, but ultimately it was the Super League side that had too much power.

Tigers head coach Daryl Powell paid the Bulldogs a compliment by selecting a strong side with just Craig Huby and Daryl Clark rested from his available first team and it was one of his stars who led the way with Australian winger Justin Carney going over for a hat-trick of tries.

Carney was provider first as Cas took the lead on five minutes, combining with Marc Sneyd to send full-back Luke Dorn over.

Another fine move was finished by Carney and with Sneyd kicking his second conversion it was 12-0.

Back came Batley as they used long kicks to keep the Tigers pinned back in their own half, but it was from long range that they pulled a try back on 25 minutes as former Castleford Josh Griffin raced almost the full length of the field for a stunning solo try that was goaled by Lee Paterson..

With no more scores until the break the game was still in the balance into the second half, but Cas gradually turned the screw after getting on top.

Carney dived over for his second try on 47 minutes to ease Tigers nerves then they blew their Championship opponents away with five tries in 18 minutes.

Dorn, Jamie Ellis, Sneyd, Carney and James Clare all went over to ensure it would be Cas in the fifth round.

Substitute Frankie Mariano completed the scoring for the visitors while Sneyd finished with six goals.

Batley did manage a consolation try in the last minute through Paterson and they were left with the proceeds of a shared gate of 2,482.
