PONTEFRACT pool star Darren Appleton was unable to inspire Great Britain to glory at the World Pool Team Championships in Beijing.
Men’s world 9-ball champion Appleton (pictured) teamed up with women’s world 9-ball champion Kelly Fisher, of South Elmsall, Chris Melling, Mark Gray and Daryl Peach in a well-fancied British team.
And they sailed through the group stages, beating teams from South Africa and India 6-0 before drawing 3-3 with South Korea.
A 4-1 win over Australia in the first knockout round set-up a quarter-final clash with China 1, in which the British edged a thrilling shoot-out 6-3 after the match had ended 3-3.
However, it was to be the last success for the British team and they fell foul of the in-form Chinese-Taipei quartet, who breezed to a 4-1 win.
The Chinese-Taipei team had won 28 and lost just three of their individual matches going into the clash with Great Britain and they went on to demolish Japan 4-0 in last Friday’s final.
