Pontefract pool star Darren ‘Dynamite’ Appleton was in top form as Europe created the biggest first day lead in PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup history as they completed a clean sweep in last night’s matches at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

They are hot favourites to retain the trophy after building a commanding 5-0 lead over the USA.

Defending champions Europe started by winning the team game before two doubles victories and singles wins for Mika Immonen and Appleton saw them shoot further ahead.

Appleton, who is making his fifth consecutive Mosconi Cup appearance as a member of Europe’s five-man team, said: “This is the best crowd the US has ever had. It’s an amazing atmosphere and they really want it back. We’ve got our own fans here though who’ve travelled a long way and we won’t let them down.”
