Brain outsmarts rivals to win summer league series

Pontefract Athletics Club’s Callum Brain was the overall winner in the under 15 boys age group in this year’s York Summer Athletics League series.

In the final competition, Brain won the discus, setting a club record of 28.84 metres.

He came third in the shot putt with 9.83 metres and he also recorded 22.16 metres in the hammer.

Isabelle Stones came first in the under 11 girls 75 metres in 11.6 seconds and Abigail Clegg was fourth in the under 11 girls 600 metres in two minutes 01.0 seconds.

In the Yorkshire Combined Events Championships at Leeds, Maria Schofield finished fifth in the under 13 girls track triathlon.

Maria recorded a massive throw of 9.04 metres in the shot putt, which improved her club record by 38 centimetres.

Her performance was more than eight per cent in advance of the England Athletics grade one standard.

She also recorded a personal best of 3.97 metres in the long jump.

Will Carter finished fourth in the under 17 men’s octathlon. He recorded a personal best in the shot putt with a throw of 9.99 metres and was near to his best with 33.98 metres in the javelin and 28.39 metres in the discus.

In the last of the four Yorkshire and District Athletics League fixtures at Wakefield, Pontefract Athletics Club finished first out of the four clubs in Division One, beating Skyrac AC for the first time this season.

The match result was Pontefract 276 points, Skyrac 254, Bradford Airedale/Pudsey & Bramley 56 and Longwood Harriers 49.

Will Carter won the under 17 men’s 1500 metres steeplechase, setting a club record of 5 minutes 45.6 seconds.

He also won the javelin with a throw of 34.13 metres.

Kye Evans won the under 15 boys 200 metres, setting a club record of 24.9 seconds.

He also won the 100 metres in 12.7 seconds.

Will Godridge won the under 15 boys shot putt, setting a club record of 10.36 metres.

Callum Brain was just one centimetre behind him with 10.35 metres.

Godridge also won the discus with 23.96 metres and the hammer with 21.56 metres.

Lewis Schofield made it a clean sweep of the throwing events for the Pontefract club in the under 15 boys age group by winning the javelin with 30.58 metres.

He also won the 80 metres hurdles in 14.1 seconds.

Callum Brain won the high jump with 1.35 metres.

Cameron Howes won the under 13 boys 75 metres hurdles, setting a club record of 14.7 seconds.

He also won the high jump with 1.38 metres and then recorded his third victory of the day in the long jump with 3.82 metres.

Max Stark recorded victories in the under 13 boys shot putt with 5.48 metres and in the 800 metres with 3:05.6.

Sophie Gilbert won the under 17 ladies 200 metres in 28.9 seconds and she also won the 300 metres in 47.7 seconds.

Ellie Lightowler won the under 17 ladies 100 metres in 14.0 seconds and Fern Burnley won the under 17 ladies shot putt with 5.80 metres.

Faye Burnley won the under 15 girls shot putt with 6.18 metres and she also won the discus with 16.79 metres.

Maria Schofield won all three of her events in the under 13 girls age group. She won the shot putt with 7.75 metres, the high jump with 1.33 metres and the 70 metres hurdles in 14.2 seconds.

Amy Brain also claimed three victories in the under 13 girls age group, taking the 150 metres in 23,2 seconds, the 800 metres in 2:54.6 and the long jump with 3.76 metres.

In the Askern 10-miles road race, Christine McCarthy finished 11th in the women’s race and first woman over 50 in 70 minutes 57 seconds.
