Cameron Howes became the first Pontefract Athletics Club athlete to win a gold medal at a Northern Athletics outdoor championships when he won the under 15 boys high jump with a clearance of 1.75 metres in last weekend’s championships at Middlesbrough.
It added to the gold medal he won in the Northern Athletics indoor championships at Sheffield in February this year and his silver medal in the England Athletics indoor championships in February.
In two weeks’ time, Cameron will compete in the England Athletics outdoor championships at Bedford to try to add another medal at national level to his collection in what has been an outstanding year for the 14 year old.
Cameron was not the only medallist from the Pontefract club in last weekend’s Northern Athletics championships. Luke Shillito won the silver medal in the under 13 boys shot putt, setting a club record of 8.24 metres.
Sam Schofield finished fifth in the same event with a personal best of 7.27 metres after being in the bronze medal position until the last round.
Maria Schofield was the Pontefract club’s third medallist at the championships after producing a huge personal best and club record of 12.67 metres in the under 17 ladies shot putt. Maria also finished fourth in the hammer with a very good throw of 46.69 metres.
Faye Lightowler was in scintillating form in Sunday’s Askern 10-mile road race, winning the women’s race by over four minutes and setting a senior women’s club record of 63 minutes, eight seconds. With Angela Hannon finishing fifth in 68-38 and Christine McCarthy twelfth in 75-14, Pontefract Athletics Club were clear winners of the women’s team prize.
Scott Dale was the club’s first finisher in 63 minutes exactly and this followed a good run five days earlier when he clocked a personal best of 18 minutes, two seconds, in the Millennium Bridge 5K at York.
