Cameron Howes became the first athlete from Pontefract Athletics Club to win a medal in a Northern Athletics Championships on Sunday.

Cameron won the silver medal in the under 13 boys high jump in the indoor championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

He equalled his personal best with a clearance of 1.40 metres and had two very near failures at 1.45 metres.

Later in the day, despite being knocked out in the heats, he improved his own club record for the 60 metres with a time of 8.94 seconds. In the long jump, he achieved 4.02 metres.

Although still in the under 11 girls age group, Isabelle Stones stepped up an age group to the under 13s.

Competing against some girls up to two years older than her, Isabelle reached the final of the under 13 girls long jump, where she finished sixth out of 32 with a jump of 3.86 metres.

Earlier in the day, Isabelle set a club record for under 11 girls in the 200 metres when finishing third in her heat in 32.83 seconds.She also clocked 9.54 seconds in the 60 metres.

Rebecca Bell finished third in her heat of the under 13 girls 200 metres in 31.44 seconds.

She also clocked 9.53 seconds in the 60 metres and two minutes 53.14 seconds in the 800 metres, which she was competing in for the first time.

Amy Brain recorded 2:48.94 in the under 15 girls 800 metres and Maria Schofield achieved 7.75 metres in the under 15 girls shot putt.

In last Sunday’s Dewsbury 10K road race, Scott Daly was the club’s first finisher in 39 minutes two seconds.

Christine McCarthy was the club’s first female finisher in 42-09, just ahead of Angela Hannon, who clocked 42-16.

Mick Flaherty crossed the line in 43-03 with Alan Boyd finishing in 45-52.
