Numerous young athletes from Pontefract Athletics Club were in record breaking form in the first outdoor track and field meeting of the season at Cleckheaton last Sunday.
Maria Schofield started the ball rolling with a club record in the under 15 girls hammer with a throw of 23.92 metres. Later in the day, Maria also set a club record in the shot putt with a throw of 8.56 metres.
Isabelle Stones won the under 11 girls long jump with 3.83 metres and, although just beaten into second place in the 75 metres, she set a club record of 11.3 seconds.
The 150 metres was a replica of the 75 metres with Isabelle again being edged into second place by the narrowest of margins, but clocking a very fast 22.7 seconds.
Reilley Blanckensee, aged only nine, had a very good run in the under 11 boys 600 metres, finishing in two minutes 02.0 seconds and removing the longest standing record on the club’s books, which had been in place since June 2001.
Logan Taylor finished third in the under 11 boys long jump with 3.18 metres.
Emily Plimmer finished second in the under 11 girls 600 metres in 2:03.8 and third in the long jump with 3.37 metres.
Jasmine Bate did extremely well in her first ever outdoor competition, finishing third in the under 13 girls high jump with 1.20 metres.
Rebecca Bell had an outstanding run in the under 13 girls 1,200 metres, breaking the club record by almost 10 seconds with a time of four minutes 21.6 seconds.
Rebecca also ran well in the two sprint races, clocking 11.6 in the 75 metres and 22.9 in the 150 metres.
Cameron Howes won the under 13 boys high jump with a clearance of 1.35 metres.
He also performed well in the long jump with a leap of 4.05 metres.
Catherine Whitworth was third in the under 15 girls high jump with 1.20 metres and Amy Brain was third in the under 15 girls long jump with 4.19 metres.
Will Carter set a club record in the under 20 men’s and senior men’s shot putt with 9.04 metres and a senior men’s record in the discus with 23.04 metres.
He also had a good throw with the javelin to record 34.17 metres, but he was a few centimetres down on Richard Howes, who surprised everybody by throwing the javelin 34.40 metres to set club records for over 40 men and over 50 men.
Richard also set a club record for men over 50 in the discus with 19.32 metres.
Callum Brain had a good throw in the under 17 men’s discus with 25.68 metres.
Sophie Gilbert was yet another athlete to make her way into the club record book.
In her first run over the distance, Sophie equalled the club record for under 20 ladies in the 400 metres with 66.9 seconds.
Altogether, 11 Pontefract club records were broken and one equalled at the meeting.
In Saturday’s Pontefract Park Run, Angela Hannon finished second in the women’s race in 20 minutes 28 seconds.
Michael Flaherty was 15th overall out of 250 in exactly 20 minutes with David Kidd 22nd in 20-36.
