Hat-trick of wins for talented Pontefract athlete

Pontefract Athletics Club’s Maria Schofield was again in outstanding form at Sunday’s first Yorkshire and District Athletics meeting at Wakefield.

Maria won the under 17 ladies hammer with a tremendous throw of 49.02 metres.

It improved her personal best by four and half metres and established a new Yorkshire and District League record. It also set a new Pontefract club record. Maria also won the shot putt with a throw of 10.74 metres and she added a third victory in the discus with 26.95 metres.

Rebecca Bell won the under 15 girls shot putt with 8.06 metres and she also won the javelin with 15.96 metres.

Jasmine Bate won the under 15 girls discus with 18.29 metres. In the same age group, Maisie Heptinstall won the 100 metres in 13.9 seconds and Stacey Carrington won the 1,500 metres in six minutes, 13.2 seconds.

The under 15 girls 4 x 100 metres relay team of Sophie Fairhurst, Alex Linder, Abigail Clegg and Maisie Heptinstall finished second, setting a club record of 57.0 seconds.

Niamh Atkinson won the under 13 girls 1,200 metres in four minutes, 56.1 seconds. Cameron Howes won the under 15 boys high jump with 1.55 metres and he was also first in the long jump with 4.64 metres. Anthony Turner won the under 15 boys discus with 12.73 metres.

Luke Shillito won the under 13 boys shot putt with 6.78 metres and Logan Askham won the under 13 boys high jump with 1.15 metres. The under 13 boys 4 x 100 metres relay team of Logan Askham, Sam Schofield, Luke Shillito and Jack Mattison were first in 62.6 seconds. Pontefract finished the Division One match in third place, with Barnsley first, Longwood second and Scunthorpe fourth.

In Sunday’s London Marathon, Scott Daly set a personal best for the marathon distance with two hours, 56 minutes 37 seconds and Kevin Waite did three hours , 44 minutes, 50 seconds.
