PONTEFRACT jockey Jacob Butterfield rode his first winner on Thursday.

Less than a month after his first ride as an apprentice jockey at Southwell at the beginning of February, Jacob notched his first victory at the same Nottinghamshire course on Thursday.

He partnered Thrust Control, a four year old chestnut gelding which is owned by Koo Racing, to win The Play Golf at Southwell Apprentice Handicap Stakes .

Taken down to the start early, they jumped off well and Jacob rode a well timed and paced race on the 7-1 shot.

After tracking the leaders, he went clear approaching the final furlong and beat the 2-1 favourite Postman by six lengths

Seventeen-year-old Jacob is attached to the Norton Spring Cottage stables of trainer Brian Ellison.

The stable was delighted with the win and Jacob’s mother Sally was at Southwell to congratulate him in the winners enclosure

Jacob, aboard Thrust Control, is seen being led by Andy Robertson into the winners’ enclosure.
