Maria Schofield of Pontefract Athletics Club began her outdoor season with an impressive victory in the under 15 girls hammer throw at Sunday’s Spenborough Open Meeting at Cleckheaton.

Maria won the event by more than eight metres with a massive throw of 39.16 metres, which is a national standard performance for somebody in this age group and well in advance of the English Schools qualifying standard.

It also created a new Pontefract Athletics Club record.

Maria also finished third in the shot putt with 9.36 metres.

Her younger brother Sam Schofield also turned in some outstanding performances.

He won the under 11 boys long jump with 3.45 metres and he also won the shot putt with 5.71 metres.

His teammate Logan Askham was second in the shot putt with 5.20 metres. Sam also finished fourth in the 75 metres in 12.0 seconds.

Jasmine Bate won the under 13 girls shot putt with 7.07 metres and Rebecca Bell came second in that event with 6.40 metres. Jasmine also finished second in the high jump with 1.30 metres and third in the 80 metres in 12.1 seconds.

Emily Plimmer won the under 13 girls 1,200 metres in 4 minutes 25.7 seconds and Cameron Howes won the under 15 boys high jump with a clearance of 1.55 metres.

Richard Howes came second in the senior men’s javelin with 32.60 metres.

George Clegg was third in the under 11 boys 600 metres in two minutes 14.4 seconds and Jack Kinnear finished third in the under 15 boys long jump with 3.68 metres.
