The Lesley Willstrop Memorial doubles started off the new season at Pontefract Squash Club in the best possible way with women’s, men’s and the popular mixed championships.
The tournament brings together players of differing standards and different ages with many of the club’s outstanding juniors paired with more experienced players.
The last match on finals night, after three days of competition, was the mixed final. Chapel Allerton’s world tour player Carrie Ramsey and Sam Wileman took on Katie Smith and Tom Bamford.
Wileman and Ramsey won a close first and then took the second more easily for a 2-0 victory.
The men’s final produced an exciting and quality match, Jack Cooper and Bamford winning 2-1 against brothers Ben and Alex Hodgett.
Smith and Hannah Shipley won the women’s championship, beating York pair Fiona Howell and Robyn Callendene.
The women’s plate final typified the event when four of the club’s junior girls made up the final, with Layla Johnson and Millie O’ Toole against Amber Copley and Laura Longfield.
Longfield’s power and superior strength proved the decisive factor.
Young Sam Perrin was also among the medals . Partnered by Sam Wileman they won the men’s plate.
The tournament, which is in memory of Lesley Willstrop, mother of James Willstrop and David Campion, typifies all that is good with the game itself and with Pontefract Squash Club.
Willstrop retains his world ranking of number three in the September list and he was present on finals night after a hectic weekend to see the legendary Jonah Barrington in Glastonbury, Somerset, then to Guildford in Surrey for a TV date with the programme Total Rugby and finally to Edgbaston Priory, Birmingham, for an exhibition night with England colleague Daryl Selby.
